Career Path Requirements

Minimum Age Required

  • 18 years

Recency: 90 Days in the past 3 years on vessels of appropriate tonnage

Sea Service Requirements

NEAR COASTAL

Master

  • 720 days of service on Ocean, Near Coastal waters or Great Lakes, OF WHICH:
    • Service on Inland waters other than GL MAY be substitutable for up to 360 days of the required service.
    • 360 days MUST have been as a master, mate or equivalent supervisory position while holding an endorsement as master, as mate, or an operator of inspected passenger vessels, OR
    • 360 days as a Master or Mate of Towing Vessel on oceans or near coastal routes and completion of a limited examination.

Mate

  • 360 days of deck service on Ocean, Near Coastal waters or Great Lakes, OF WHICH:
    • Service on Inland waters MAY substitute for up to 180 days of the required service, OR
    • 90 days of deck service while holding an endorsement as Master of Inland not more than 200 GRT, OR
    • An OUPV/NC may obtain this endorsement by completing an examination; however, applicant must still submit service to meet tonnage calculation.
  • Service gained in the engine room on vessels not more than 200 GRT may be creditable for up to 25% of the deck service requirements.

INLAND

Master

  • 360 total days of service OF WHICH:
    • 180 days must have been as a Master, Mate, OUPV or Master/ Mate of Towing Vessels while holding a MMC endorsed as: Master, Mate, OUPV or Master/ Mate of Towing.

Mate

  • 360 days of service in the deck department.

NOTE: Service gained in the engine room on vessels not more than 200 GRT, may be creditable for up to 25% of the deck service requirements for Mate.

GREAT LAKES

Master

  • 360 days of service OF WHICH:
    • 180 days must have been as a Master, Mate, OUPV or Master/ Mate of Towing Vessels while holding a MMC endorsed as: Master, Mate, OUPV or Master/ Mate of Towing Vessels AND 90 days of service on the Great Lakes.

Mate

  • 180 days of service in the deck department OF WHICH:
    • 90 days must have been on Great Lakes.

NOTE: Service gained in the engine room on vessels not more than 200 GRT, may be creditable for up to 25% of the deck service requirements for Mate.

OCEAN

Master

  • 1080 days of service on Oceans Near Coastal waters or Great Lakes, OF WHICH:
    • Service on Inland waters other than GL MAY substitute for up to 50% of required service, AND
    • 720 days MUST have been as master, mate or equivalent supervisory position while holding a MMC endorsement as master, mate or as OUPV, OR
    • 720 days as Master or Mate of Ocean or N/C Towing Vessel and completion of limited examination.

Mate

  • 360 days of deck service on Ocean, Near Coastal or Great Lakes waters, OF WHICH:
    • Service on inland waters, other than GL, may substitute for up to 180 days of the total required service, OR
    • 90 days of deck service on ocean, near coastal, Great Lakes or inland waters while holding an endorsement as Master of Inland self-propelled, sail, or auxiliary sail vessels less than 200 GRT (Note: includes all lesser tonnages), OR
    • An OUPV N/C may obtain this endorsement by completing an examination on rules and regulations for small passenger vessels; however, the applicant must still submit service to so a tonnage calculation may be completed.

AUXILIARY SAIL ENDORSEMENT

Master

  • In addition to the required course, 180 days on a sail or auxiliary sail vessel must be on the Great Lakes or Inland Waters, OR
  • 360 days on sail or auxiliary sail vessels on Near Coastal and Oceans Waters

Mate

  • In addition to the required course, 180 days on a sail or auxiliary sail vessel must be on the Great Lakes or Inland Waters, OR
  • 360 days on sail or auxiliary sail vessels on Near Coastal and Oceans Waters

Master

  • 180 days of service on vessels of 101 GRT or above, OR 360 days of service on vessels at 67 to 101 GRT

Mate

  • 90 days of service on vessels of 101 GRT or above, OR 180 days of service on vessels at 67 to 101 GRT

GREAT LAKES

Master

  • 90 days of service on vessels of 101 GRT or above, OR 180 days of service on vessels of 67 GRT or above

Mate

  • 45 days of service on vessels of 101 GRT or above, OR 90 days of service on vessels at 67 to 101 GRT

INLAND

Master

  • 90 days of service on vessels of 101 GRT or above, OR 180 days of service on vessels of 67 GRT or above

Mate

  • 45 days of service on vessels of 101 GRT or above, OR 90 days of service on vessels at 67 to 101 GRT

OCEANS

Master

  • 270 days of service on vessels of 101 GRT or above, OR 540 days of service on vessels at 67 to 101 GRT

Mate

  • 90 days of service on vessels of 101 GRT or above, OR 180 days of service on vessels at 67 to 101 GRT

Application Requirements

  • Completed USCG Application including sea service documentation
  • USCG Physical Examination
  • USCG Drug Test
  • Transportation Workers Identification Card (TWIC)

Training Requirements

  • OUPV
  • Upgrade OUPV to Master 100 Ton
  • Upgrade Master 100 Ton to Master 200 Ton
  • First Aid/CPR
  • FCC Radio Operators Permit
