About NMI

A Brief History of NMI

Northeast Maritime Institute began in 1981 as a New England branch of the Tidewater School of Navigation based in Norfolk, Virginia. In 1995, Eric and Angela Dawicki assumed ownership and renamed it Northeast Maritime Institute (NMI). NMI reorganized itself into a full-service maritime education and training institution meeting  U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Marine exam and training requirements and became the first training institution in the United States to provide training under the International Convention on Standards of Training and Certification for Watchkeepers and Seafarers (STCW), 1978, as amended. Over the next fifteen years, NMI developed dozens of USCG and STCW compliant courses covering a range of deck, engineering and security topics. In 2014, NMI began the extensive process of creating a dynamic learning management system to deliver many courses online, reaching mariners across the globe.  Northeast Maritime Online (NEMO°) has emerged as a transformative model for maritime education and training. NEMO° currently has a catalogue of over forty online courses available for purchase.

In 2015, NMI opened the College of Maritime Science after receiving approval from the United States Coast Guard’s National Maritime Center and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Board of Higher Education to deliver the Associate in Applied Science in Nautical Science Degree. The success of the College has been driven through immense passion, compassion and empathy towards our students and our industry partners at large. We provide a nurturing and caring atmosphere for our students to learn in and we practice what we preach to our students – honesty, integrity and hard work in our everyday lives at work. The results speak for themselves – our graduates are regarded as some of the best-equipped and hardest working in the maritime industry.

A key to our success is our focus on delivering the best possible higher education experience through our “micro-college model” and developing comprehensive and engaging cooperative educational models that we can share with global partners who can teach, mentor and perhaps employ our students in maritime and ocean-oriented fields.

Accreditation

Northeast Maritime Institute is accredited by the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges.*

This accreditation status does not extend to professional maritime training courses, continuing education courses and short courses offered at the Institute or through NEMO (Northeast Maritime Online).
