NMI’s Endorsement of the Mariners Medico Guide
Northeast Maritime Institute is excited to announce its endorsement of the Mariners Medico Guide (MMG). The Mariners Medico Guide was developed to provide free and available medical guidance and resources to mariners.
The Guide was written by specialists in maritime medicine and is continuously updated to reflect accurate and up-to-date information. Built specifically for mariners at sea, the Guide provides clear and concise guidance for mariners to deal with common emergencies.
Not only is there limited medical knowledge onboard vessels, but the availability of medical resources, including medications and equipment, is also limited. Medical situations can arise, and it is vital that those trained to perform medical care onboard have as many medical resources as possible, especially since vessels could be days away from external medical aid and resources. Thus, the more information that mariners have regarding medical emergencies and equipment, the more effectively they can respond to such situations.

The Guide provides a symptom-based and step-by-step approach to assess and evaluate seafarers’ conditions. The Guide utilizes visuals of medical conditions and procedures as well as interactive features to clearly guide mariners in providing medical assistance and care. It also consists of fully indexed information about diseases and injuries, as well as information on medications commonly available and medical equipment often needed onboard ships.
The Mariners Medico Guide application is available for download on phones, tablets and desktop computers, making it easily accessible to mariners all over the world. The Guide is accessible offline – when there is limited and/or no access to internet or cellular connection. If any updates are made to the Guide whilst offline, the Guide will automatically update on an individual’s device(s) once it is reconnected to internet/cellular.
