Tonga Training Courses

Northeast Maritime Institute (NMI) is proud to announce that the Tonga Ministry of Infrastructure’s Marine and Ports Division’s approval of NMI’s Basic Safety Refresher and Maritime Security training as required by the STCW Convention.  The program is specifically designed for the Tongan seafarer to receive a Certificate of Training through Northeast Maritime Institute’s comprehensive maritime learning management system, Northeast Maritime Online (NEMO°).  Once completed, the practical assessment portion of the training is to be completed at the Tonga Maritime Polytechnic Institute (TMPI) with the assistance of Northeast Maritime Institute trained Instructors and Assessors.  Completion of the NEMO° training and assessments shall allow a Tonga credentialed seafarers to renew their STCW Certificate of Proficiency through the government of Tonga.

  • A seafarer will be required to complete a custom designed “Training Package A” or “Training Package B” depending on the Certificate of Proficiency that one is seeking for revalidation.
  • After completion of the online portion of training, instructions will be provided to schedule your practical and assessment at the Tonga Maritime Polytechnic Institute and you will receive a Certificate of Training.

Training Package A

For Ordinary Seafarers, Deck Ratings, and Engine Ratings

  • 2 Day – NEMO° Basic Safety and Proficiency in Survival Craft Refresher Training Online

  • 4 Hour – NEMO° Security Awareness Training

  • 2 Day – Refresher Basic Safety Assessments at TMPI

  • ½ Day – Personal Survival Techniques Refresher -In Water (pool) Assessments

  • ½ Day – First Aid Refresher Assessments

  • 1 Day – Fire Fighting Refresher Assessments

Total Estimated Time for Completion: 32 Hours (16 Hours using NEMO° and 16 Hours at TMPI)*

Training Package B

For Able Seafarer Deck, Able Seafarer Engine, Watchkeeper Deck and Watchkeeper Engine

  • 2 Day – NEMO° Basic Safety and Proficiency in Survival Craft Refresher Training Online

  • 8 Hour – Online VPDSD Training

  • 2 Day – Refresher Basic Safety Assessments at TMPI

  • ½ Day – Personal Survival Techniques Refresher -In Water (pool) Assessments

  • ½ Day – First Aid Refresher Assessments

  • 1 Hour – VPDSD Examination and Practical

  • 1 Day – Fire Fighting Refresher Assessments

Total Estimated Time for Completion: 40 Hours (24 Hours using NEMO and 16 Hours at TMPI)*
